Ripple Africa
Proud To Be Partnered With Ripple Africa Forestry Projects

Ripple Africa is a UK-registered charity that works in Malawi to reduce extreme poverty and restore healthy forests. To prevent a rapidly growing population from clearing established forest for farming and firewood, Ripple Africa have planted over 21 million trees to provide the fuel and food needs, saving existing trees from this exploitation. As the motto goes, plant one tree to protect a further three!

High population growth has been the prime cause of deforestation across Malawi and has led to soil degradation, landslides, perennial rivers drying up, rain shortages and depletion of wildlife. Wood is taken from indigenous forests for building and to use for cooking. Increasing numbers of people have become involved in the production and sale of charcoal, particularly in areas near towns, further decimating the remaining forests. Trees are also cut down for firewood and timber used for housebuilding or are burned to make space for growing crops.

Why Ripple Africa?

Ripple Africa’s tree planting project is not only about planting trees in Malawi, but also about changing the way people think about their natural environment and the destructive and unsustainable actions which are causing deforestation. By involving farmers, community groups and schools, Ripple Africa aims not only to encourage more tree planting in Africa, but to slowly change how people value and use all their natural resources.

Ripple Africa provide economic incentives and simple planting techniques to support local communities in restoring their local environment and economy. They keep their systems simple, so they can be easily replicated and implemented by people who don’t have many resources and must deal with treacherous roads, unreliable electricity, and spotty internet.

It is not just tree planting, but also forest conservation, sponsoring diverse crops (including fruit, chicken and vegetables), fish preservation (Lake Malawi is the most biodiverse in the world) as well as introducing more fuel-efficient cookstoves and supporting local education programmes.

Putting the local community at the centre of their work inspires great commitment to reforestation in their country and a sense of ownership to protect their forests long-term. Both Ripple Africa and the communities’ success are inextricably entwined.
